As a boy, Lachie learned the art of tracking animals from his father and given his love of Nature, it proved no surprise when he followed in Murdo’s footsteps and become a gillie himself.
At eleven, he spotted his first a Scottish Beastie: a MacSporran chopping down a tree to fashion itself a new caber. Soon, Lachie’s patience let him discover an unique world thriving all around him. It was at this point that he started writing meticulously the first of his journals. Over the years, he amassed a substantial body of evidence but was always wary of presenting it to a sceptical, urbanised world.
As a man, Lachie is the epitome of the Highlander – he doesn’t take fools lightly and is fiercely loyal to friends. He is also an excellent cook (his mother’s influence).
However, the question that should be occupying all who visit this page is not ‘Who is Lachie?’ but … ‘Where is Lachie?’
In April, 2010, he vanished. The man himself predicted that he would be imprisoned underground by the faeries, an idea that he knew would be derided by those unused to country ways.
Shortly after his disappearance, a letter and large wooden trunk were left anonymously outside a Publishing House.
The letter was from Lachie and in it he instructed that the trunk’s contents (over 50 years of observations) be used to reveal this unknown stratum of the Scottish Natural World.
This website is the direct result of that letter, a copy of which can be viewed by clicking here.
